Advancing gender-responsive synergies across the Rio conventions: Gender equality at the intersection of climate action, biodiversity protection and sustainable land management | Publications

Regardless of many years of coordination initiatives, the implementation of the Rio conventions—the treaties designed to guard life on earth, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—and their gender provisions and motion plans stays largely siloed, lowering alternatives and producing inefficiencies that stretch authorities capacities and budgets. Current coordination mechanisms fall quick, and capability is inadequate.

Events to the Rio conventions, in addition to their Secretariats and stakeholders in any respect ranges, urgently want to beat these silos by way of renewed consideration to the interlinkages and collaboration on strategic approaches that construct gender-responsive synergies throughout all processes—from conferences, to negotiations, to finance, to capability growth, implementation, monitoring, and reporting. Figuring out and implementing synergies wouldn’t solely advance the mutual targets of the Rio conventions but in addition enhance efficiencies throughout insurance policies, programming, and financing.   

This working paper highlights the urgency of addressing gender inequalities throughout the Rio conventions, offers examples of the place progress has been made, and identifies thematic entry factors for implementing gender equality issues throughout the conventions. It makes suggestions for actions to speed up the synergistic implementation of the gender provisions and motion plans of the conventions.
